Tips for using the Swine Information Library USB Flash Drive

Most tips also apply to the 2009 and earlier editions of the AASV Swine Information CD-ROM.

Viewing articles in your web browser

The AASV Swine Information Library USB Flash Drive includes HTML indices to articles. This index loads automatically on most systems when the CD is inserted and offers a convenient way to access an article when you know where it was published. (If you have disabled AutoPlay on your system, open the index.htm file on the top level of the drive.)

On systems with the Acrobat Reader plug-in installed, you will be able to view articles directly from your web browser by following links in these indexes. If you do not have this plug-in, the articles will open directly in Acrobat Reader.

The Acrobat web browser plug-in does not support the "Search" command. To search the complete content of the Swine Information Library, you must use Acrobat Reader with Search.

Can't find the search command?

search button in toolbarThe File toolbar contains a Search button, pictured to the right. It looks like a pair of binoculars superimposed on a document page icon. If you see this button, the full-text Search feature is installed. Not all versions of Acrobat Reader include the search command. If the search function is not available, try uninstalling your current version of Acrobat Reader and installing the version found on the Swine Information USB Flash Drive. Some installers may require that you do a "Custom" installation to use this feature.

Acrobat Reader version 6 is not able to use Acrobat Catalog files from earlier versions. It can, however, search all PDFs in a given location, for example, a drive. More information on configuring Search with Acrobat Reader 6 is available in that application's online help.
